Housing

The Watson Housing Authority
The Watson Housing Authority is composed of a five member board of directors appointed by the Minister of Housing, for a fixed term which may be renewed.  The housing authority signs an agreement with Sask. Housing Corp. (SHC) to act as an agent for SHC.  This agreement legally defines the roles and responsibilities of the housing authority.  The board members are all volunteers, who work with a contracted manager and a maintenance contractor.

Through the management agreement, SHC appoints the housing authority to manage and deliver specific SHC housing programs and housing projects.  The management agreement is comprised of a number of policies provided by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, these include policies such as:  responsibilities, authority, accountability, partnerships, conflict of interest, confidentiality, board meetings, board minutes and standards.

The local board has the responsibility of managing fifty-four housing units. These are comprised of semi-attached senior units, family units, split level duplexes, ground level duplexes and a multiple-unit complex.  Approximately eighty persons reside in these units, mostly being senior citizens. These dwellings and grounds are maintained continuously by the maintenance people under the supervision of the manager. These dwellings are also inspected annually by the board members and manager.

By following proper procedures, the vacancy rate is maintained within a reasonable level which accounts for a community the size of Watson being able to have a portfolio of this magnitude.

Pastoral Care
A ministry of caring, visiting and listening Christian Service is available to bring comfort to the sick and distressed and has been an important component in the healing of patients in hospitals for many years.  This work is a responsibility presumed and done mostly by religious communities.

A program was developed a number of years ago to instruct lay persons of all faiths and ages in the skills of pastoral care ministry in our area and a number of interested persons of Watson and district formed a Pastoral Care group.  The focus of activity of this ministry is the Lodge, the bereaved and the distressed.

When feelings and concerns are shared in trust and confidence, somehow burdens are lifted and the persons involved all benefit by being strengthened and especially helped and blessed.

All involved are volunteers.  Meetings are held once a month.

Watson Community Club
The Watson Community Club was formed by a group of community minded individuals in 1945 and has worked for the betterment of the community and the people within it ever since. 2010 marks the 65th Anniversary of the Community Club.

Presently the Watson Community Club’s projects include: membership night, Hallowe’en Tea & Bake Sale, Arts & Crafts Show & Sale, cedar chest / quilt raffle, Christmas greeting board, walk/bike-a-thon & poker rally, town beautification and Ladies Night Out.

Perhaps the biggest undertaking is the 70 Plus Supper and Christmas Party held on the first Sunday in December each year.  All local seniors aged 70 and over are treated to a free afternoon of local entertainment followed by a delicious turkey supper with all the trimmings.  It continues to be well attended every year.

The residents of Watson and surrounding areas are very supportive of all these projects. In turn, monetary support is given to the following local organizations: Watson & District Heritage Museum, Watson Library, Watson Fire Dept., Watson Swimming Pool, Watson Recreation Fund, Watson Elementary School Playground, Watson Care-a-van, Quill Plains Lodge Bingo fund, Humboldt and Naicam Music Festivals, Grade 7 Proficiency Award and Grade 12 Academic Award.

The Watson Community Club meets the second Monday of the month in the Public Library. New members are always welcome to join. We’re proud to have made our community a better place.

Watson New Horizons
Watson New Horizons began in October 1973.  Its purpose was, and still is, to provide a broad range of activities for seniors in the community.

The former Zoboski store was purchased in November 1973 and renovated.

In October 1989, the members realized they needed to make extensive repairs to their building or construct a new building. Using blueprints from Kelvington’s center, they constructed a 40 x 80 feet building with a wood frame, floor heat and metal siding at #126 Main Street for an estimated cost of $120,000.00. Some grants, generous donations and much fundraising ensued. In 1991 4-Brothers of Watson constructed and finished the building. Less than a year later, they burned the mortgage. Since 2001 numerous grants have helped to upgrade the facility.

Regular activities include singing on Wednesday in winter; schmear, bridge and canasta on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons; and a weekly cribbage tournament at night from October to May. The last Thursday of every month is a pot luck dinner with entertainment at many of these.  A fundraising dinner is held each January with proceeds going to two local organizations. A spring and fall bridge tournament brings together many people from the surrounding towns.

The center also has two pool tables and two shuffleboard tables for use by the members.

The building is rented out for many local functions. It is used free of charge for charitable fundraisers and funeral lunches. Contact people for this are Alice Bieker and Mel Prickett.

Watson Recreation Board
The Watson Recreation Board administers Sask. Lotteries Community Grants through the Prairie Central District for Sport, Culture & Recreation. In the past few years the Rec. Board has ran a summer program for the youth of the community. The Rec Board also puts on several fund raising events throughout the year.

A Recreation Fund was set up a number of years ago through the Rec Board to provide monies for the updating of recreational facilities in Watson.

An annual 3 day Summer Event is held each June complete with a slowpitch tournament and cabaret to raise funds for our community facilities.
